Dorper Sheep
Dorper sheep were also bred in South Africa in more arid veldt areas,
it is a mix between a Blockheaded Persian and a Horned Dorset. Dorper
sheep have a high growth and fattening ratio. A lamb can be ready for
the slaughter in 3-4 months depending on the country they are grazing.
Lambs at 3-4 months can weigh as much as 34kg and have a carcass weight
of 19kg. The Dorper sheep are highly adaptable being comfortable in
harsh conditions as well as in more pleasant environments. Essentially
the Dorper are a meat animal, as such they have a hair/wool covering
that does not require shearing as they will lose the wool/hair in
warmer climates, or their coat will become more substantial in colder
climates.
Dorper sheep are highly productive, there is a high percentage of twins
in most lambs, and they do not have specified season to reproduce so
farmers are able, with good management to get three lams in two years.
Dorper lambs wean well and are early grazers, and their mothers are
quite maternal and are good carers for both single and multiple births.
Dorper meat is of the highest quality. Being quite muscular the meat is
usually quite lean with only minimal amounts of fat. This makes for
high quality taste.
